Writer, teacher, memory worker
Kristi D. Osorio is the author of The Sound of Burning: A Mother, a Daughter, a Murder, forthcoming from the University of Georgia Press in Fall 2026. Her memoir focuses on the violent crime she witnessed as a teen that continues to shape her life, blending her personal story with a cultural critique of true crime as entertainment. She is the winner of the 2023 Indiana Review Creative Nonfiction Prize selected by Camonghne Felix and the Sonora Review "Mercy" Contest in Nonfiction selected by Maggie Nelson.
Her writing and teaching have been supported by fellowships from Columbia University, Wesleyan University, Vermont Studio Center, and the Kenyon Review. She has served communities affected by the criminal justice system through writing, teaching, and advocacy at Rikers Island, Columbia School of Social Work’s Beyond the Bars, and the Vera Institute of Justice.
